Laura Flores July 2009

We have been delighted in the last few months to have been able to introduce a Pre-School class, called a PEPE into Laura Flores. A volunteer from England, Margaret, set up the scheme with the Ecuadorians, and especially working with the Baptist Church. The idea of the PEPE, which stands for Programa, Educativo, Pre Escolar is to give four year old children the chance of a year's pre school, with alot of Christian content.

We now have 16+ children; we work with local women who give the classes and help . Once a month the Baptist Church vistis the families of the children.

Laura Flores News

The work in Laura Flores continues. Many of the women now know how to make cards and simple earrings and bracelets, many of which I have been selling in my time in the UK. Pastor Uriel Solorzano and his team from the Baptist church visit twice a week to talk to the steady group of people who are eager to hear about how they can change their lives for the better through knowing Jesus as their Saviour.

Margaret, from the UK, made a very valuable contribution to the social development of the barrio by setting up and running a course on health and nutrition in Laura flores. It was very well received. At the end the women received a certificate of attendance. Courses like this are excellent for helping marginalised people maximise the resources available to them, and for teaching them how to keep themselves and their children healthy.

In Ecuador again!

The last few days in the UK were unbelievably hectic.

I travelled to Formby near Liverpool to meet our wonderful supporters in St. Luke's who have worked incredibly hard to raise money for Life in Abundance. I spoke at their Saturday night barn dance, at two services on Sunday, and to two groups of school children on the Monday. I then got the train and returned to Leigh on Sea, where, thankfully, the papers for my visa were awaiting my arrival.

Image It has been good to return to Ecuador after a break of two months. I visited family and friends which was really the best form of rest, and had the opportunity to speak in a church about the work in Ecuador.

The trustees of the charity organised a concert which was a lovely occasion. Many local musicians gave of their talents freely, and Sue and Val, who had been out to visit Ecuador for the charity Hope for the Future gave a lively and interesting talk.

We have escaped the ravages of Swine Flue here, but the economic down turn is hitting hard, and work is hard to find.     July 2009
