Skills For Life Programme            logo

The Skills For Life Training Centre is located within Pablo Palacios School in the centre of Santo Domingo. The Centre caters for children aged 5 - 16, with a wide range of learning difficulties, providing an all round skills based education. Locally, this Skills For Life programme is known as 'Habilidades Para La Vida'.

Nearly 70% of Ecuador's 4.8 million children live in poverty, according to information published by UNICEF. Large disparities between rich and poor are a persistent fact of life in Ecuador. Indigenous and Afro-Ecuadorian children are more likely to grow up in poverty and face difficulties in accessing an education.  This lack of access is even more difficult when a child has a learning difficulty.

The Skills For Life/Habilidades Para La Vida programme involves:

  • individual education programmes
  • numeracy & literacy
  • cookery, arts and craft skills
  • skills for self care
  • hygiene education
  • motor skills
  • social skills
  • participation in local & social cultural events

This programme commenced over 10 years ago and has continued to grow and develop. There are now three classes with the programme run by Ecuadorian facilitators, often supported by volunteers from the UK, Europe and the USA.  LIAT works hard to fund the facilitators.
